Visit famed sites of learning dating back to the Edo period, sacred places such shrines and churches, and groups of universities in the educational zone, which dot the area from Yushima to Ochanomizu. This is a course that is perfect for knowing the present by learning about the past.

  2. Spot1 Yushimatenmangu Shrine(Yushima Tenjin) About 20 minutes

    Yushimatenmangu Shrine(Yushima Tenjin)

    A shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, revered as the god of learning. Picturesque votive tablets are offered on the grounds to pray for passing entrance exams, family safety, protection from danger, etc. The plum garden is also a famous spot for viewing plum blossoms.

    It is located on a steep hill, but visitors can avoid the steep incline by taking the route from Hongo. A wheelchair accessible restroom is available outside the grounds. Caution will be required because the road in front of the restroom has a inclination of about 6 degrees.

    International Origami Center

    Here, visitors can casually enjoy traditional washi (Japanese paper) culture. The shop on the 3rd floor offers a wide array of origami and washi paper.

    The gallery on the 2nd floor can only be accessed by the stairway. Visitors in wheelchairs can access the shop on the 3rd floor and workshop on the 4th floor by taking the elevator and stair lift.

  4. Spot3 Kanda-jinja Shrine (Kanda Myojin) About 20 minutes

    Kanda-jinja Shrine (Kanda Myojin)

    Edo's guardian deity enshrined at the former outer gate of Edo Castle. The shrine was highly revered by both the Edo Shogunate and the common people. The Kanda Festival is famous as one of the three great festivals of Edo as well as Japan. Enshrining the god of prosperity in business, it looks after Japan's central business areas of Kanda, Nihombashi, Akihabara, Otemachi, and Marunouchi, etc.

    The entrance and grounds have no steps or slopes, making it easy to navigate even by visitors in wheelchairs. A wheelchair-accessible restroom is available on the 1st floor of the Cultural Exchange Hall. Both sides of the shrine pavilion have slopes (8 to 10 degrees inclinations).

     Holy Resurrection Cathedral, Tokyo (Nikolai-do)

    A cathedral of the Orthodox Church in Japan. It is commonly known as St. Nicholai Church, named after the Russian saint who introduced the Orthodox faith to Japan.

    A museum with a history of over 80 years, themed on handicrafts, crime and punishment, and archaeology. Volunteer guides provide an explanation of the exhibits every week from Tuesday to Friday.

    About 5 minutes on foot foot About 300 meters Travel Tips JR Ochanomizu Station is now under construction to become barrier free by March 2019 (there are still no elevators at this time). Ochanomizu Station on the Tokyo Metro Line has elevators that connect the ground level and platform level at both Exit 1 (bound for Ogikubo) and Exit 2 (bound for Ikebukuro). Restroom available on the Ogikubo-bound platform.
