    Kunitachi University Street

    Kunitachi University Street is the mainstreet in Kunitachi and is selected as one of the 100 New Tokyo scenes. There are many things to see throughout the year including the rows of cherry blossom in spring, the new leaves of summer, Tenka-Ichi in Autumn and the Winter illuminations. Hitotsubashi University spreads out to either side of University Street and is dotted with buildings inspired by mediaeval Europe such as the Kanematsu Auditorium. Also, the street is characterized by the street lamps. Imported by Lenz from France, they were installed outside the Kunitachi-ekimae Daigakudori Shopping Street in 1985.

    About 2 minutes on foot foot About 80 meters Travel Tips ・The pavement along Koshu Road from the bus stop to the Yabotenmangu-mae traffic lights is narrow so be careful when moving.
    ・Since the pathway leading up from the Shrine Torii of the Yabotenmangu Shrine is a long stairway it would be a good idea to use the sloping road with an incline of about 8 to 10 degrees located on your left when heading toward the Torii. Some sections are quite steep. A helper would be needed in this situation.

    Yabotenmangu Shrine

    In 901, Michitake, the 3rd son of Sugawara-no-Michizane was sent to modern day Yaho, Kunitachi city and after receiving news of Michizane’s death in 903, enshrined a statue here. The Tenman shrine is the oldest in East Japan and is one of the 3 Kanto Tenjin, the other 2 being Yushimatenmangu Shrine and Kameidotenjinja Shrine.

    The key to the toilet with wheelchair-accessible restroom can be borrowed from the Temple office. There is a slope (about 8 to 10 degrees) from the approach to the grounds so wheelchair users should be careful. Please move over the cobbles to the main hall.

    Joyama Park, Joyama Sato no Ie

    An agriculture experience and agriculture information point at the south of Joyama, rich with nature in Joyama park and fields. Opened in March, 2015, enjoy cycling or picknicks in this village that has old thatched houses, fields, waterways, plants and groves of trees. Produce from nearby farmers is also popular. This is a great spot for families to learn about city agriculture.Take a break and enjoy the rural view.

    Kunitachi city old housing

    This is housing built in the Edo period that has thatched hip-and-gable roofing. Donated to Kunitachi city by the famous Yanagizawa Yuichiro, it is also known as the “old Yanagizawa house”. Various traditional activities from regions, including Yaho, Aoyagi and Ishida, are reproduced in the old house.

  11. Spot5 Hake no Michi About 10 minutes

    Hake no Michi

    Going south on University Street, there are lanes in the terraced cliff lines known as "Hake", a rural belt lush with greenery. Enjoy the beautiful natural vistas all year round along with the sping water at the bottom of the Hake. A promenade has recently been installed, making this a popular place for locals to take a stroll.

    Kunitachi Regional Museum

    Protecting the important culture of Kunitachi with the image of "a meeting of greenery and culture", this museum was opened to inform later generations. Children can easily understand the 6 permanent exhibitions of Nature, Hake, History, Lifestyle, The city and Outside.

    KUNITACHI ART BIENARE Open Air Sculpture

    Kunitachi has been hosting an outdoor sculpture exhibition since 2015. The second event took place in 2018. The sculptures are produced after the locations where they will be displayed are designated to ensure harmony with the surroundings.

    Sculptures are set up at 16 spots throughout the city: 6 locations on University Street and 10 locations on Sakura Street. They are setup in the greenway belt but can be viewed up close even from the walking path.
